He is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century: Vassily Kandinsky, the painter of the Russian soul, a name forever linked to the birth of abstraction.
German artist Gabriele Münter, on the other hand, has never ceased to represent the visible. She captured the essence of motifs on canvas, with astonishing modernity. When she became Kandinsky's pupil in 1902, she had no idea that they would embark on a passionate love affair that would propel them both to the pinnacle of their art.
Kandinsky and Münter discovered the village of Murnau in the Bavarian Alps, with its multicolored facades, which acted as a detonator in their artistic conception. Color bursts forth, vivid flat tints are surrounded by black, and each painting is stripped of detail and becomes pure expression.
Gabriele bought the house of their dreams in the hills above Murnau, which became a meeting place for avant-garde artists. The result was the Blue Rider, an Expressionist-inspired group of artists.
Buoyed by the group's energy, Kandinsky set himself apart and took the lead: he theorized about the "inner necessity" expressed in his impressions, improvisations and compositions. He took the step towards abstraction.
Gabriele Münter, on the other hand, prefers to give figurative expression to her inner nature. Endowed with great strength of character, she never ceases to encourage her companion, without imitating him.
