Monument du débarquement de Provence

Historic site and monument

Cavalaire-sur-Mer
To immortalize the courage and the self-abnegation of the soldiers and the sailors who landed here in August 1944, Cavalaire dedicates them this monument. This granite monument, representing the Freedom, is dedicated to the allied armies having participated in the landing of Provence in August 1944. Two high rectangular columns are united in their bottoms by a relief decorated with a very stylized draped woman, her hair in the wind.

Originally constructed on another location, as a replacement of a first monument, it was finally moved during the construction of "the House of the Sea" and now faced it. It is the work of the architect G. Nadal (2nd Grand Prix of Rome).

On the esplanade, 3 granite blocks also commemorate the arrival of the 1st DFL and the 3rd American Army to Cavalaire. The 1st one represents the marshal de Lattre de Tassigny, the badges of the Rhine, of the Danube and of Cavalaire, the 2nd and the 3rd ones the 1st DFL and the 3rd D.I.U.S. (texts + badges).
