Cimetière de Gassin
Gassin Historic site and monument listed (CMN)
The cemetery of Gassin has been located at the northern entrance to the village since 1881, succeeding the two cemeteries in the village. At the end of the hill which shelters the village, the peaceful view extends over the plain and to the sea. It shelters the bodies of personalities.
All year round, daily between 7.30 am and 6 pm.
Until the middle of the 19th century, Gassin had two cemeteries: one near the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church, the other near the Saint-Sébastien chapel (above the Puits Saint-Jean -Baptist).
It was created in 1881 in the middle of the scrubland at the time, near the monument to Saint-Joseph which preceded it. It was enlarged in 1935 and then several times since.
The shell is in shale, rubble without chain, dressed stone, and plaster. The portal which frames the door is a cornice crowning the serpentine wall. The monument bears the date 1881; it is engraved on the base of the cross surmounting the portal.
The cemetery of Gassin is a calm and peaceful space, dominating the Bourrian valley towards the west, towards the bay of Cavalaire. It hosts a garden of remembrance.
