Le Nouveau Village de Gassin
Gassin Historic site and monument listed (CMN) - Most beautiful villages in France - Modern - 20th C
Châteauneuf’s Hannibal Square is the heart of the new village of Gassin, created in the 1990s by the creator of the lakeside town of Port-Grimaud: François Spoerry. This extension has received an architecture award for its excellence.
All year round, daily.
Awarded with a Marianne d'Or and the European architecture prize Philippe Rotthier, the modern village of Gassin extends to the south of the medieval village.
Realized by the architect François Spoerry at the end of the 20th century, the project for a new village has succeeded in bringing Gassin to life.
The architect, known worldwide for his construction of the Port-Grimaud marina, a lakeside village built between 1966 and 2000, designed an extension of the village comprising individual houses, apartment buildings, but also a public housing, shops and a expansion of the elementary school.
In total, 124 dwellings harmoniously arranged and perfectly integrated into the old village. The first stone was laid on March 1, 1989 and the new village of Gassin was inaugurated on September 10, 1993. This exemplary achievement earned its designer to be nominated for the prestigious "Prince of Wales Prize" awarded by the Académie de l ' Harvard University and to receive in 1998 the "European Prize for the reconstruction of the city", Philippe Rotthier foundation.
