Sainte-Maxime
In the Nartelle district, a stele has been erected amidst a flowerbed to honor the memory of the 2nd Cuirassiers Regiment. It serves as an everlasting reminder that, on August 15 1944, its tanks were the first to reach Sainte-Maxime. When Operation Dragoon was launched in Provence on August 15, 1944, the town of Sainte-Maxime and La Nartelle beach were at the heart of the first Allied assault. Three American divisions and a French unit landed on Red and Green Beach, Yellow Beach and Blue Beach, the code names of the beaches targeted by the operation.
A unit of the First Armored Division entered the town that day. The liberation of Provence had begun. It was to the valiant soldiers of this 2nd Cuirassiers Regiment that the commune wished to express its eternal gratitude.
