Aikido is a Japanese martial art, not to be confused with a martial sport, as it has no competition and no champions. Like all arts, the aim is self-improvement. It's an art of living, which follows the principle of oriental philosophy plus (yin/yang), but it's also an effective art of defense against one or more armed or unarmed adversaries.
