Monument aux Morts
Historic site and monument
Sainte-Maxime
The monument was originally erected on the Place des Aliziers, also known as the Place de l'Eglise, in accordance with a resolution passed by the town council on 14 February 1925. The names of the soldiers who fell in the First World War, from 1914 to 1918, were engraved on the monument.
In April 1944, it was moved to the Place de la Mairie, now known as the Place Pasteur, due to the evacuation measures imposed by the German forces.
In 1946, the Town Council commissioned the Maxim sculpt
Le Char Sherman
Historic site and monument
Sainte-Maxime
A vestige of the Allied landings, the metal structure of the Sherman tank has been rising out of the sand on La Nartelle beach after every major storm for decades.
In December 2011, for safety reasons, the town undertook to completely remove the American armoured unit from the sand and move it. The tank - which weighs around 30 tonnes - was then immersed for several weeks in the harbour to slow down the oxidation process, then cleaned and treated so that it could be displayed to the public.
La Chapelle de la Nartelle
Historic site and monument
Sainte-Maxime
The Sainte-Jeanne-de-Chantal chapel forms an ensemble with the independent sandstone staircase, which bridges the difference in level between Avenue Mireille and the median strip on which it is built.
A small oratory is built into the retaining wall, in sandstone like the six rows of rounded steps to the west, allowing the site to be used as a summer chapel.
The chapel itself is built of concrete. The rendering makes it impossible to tell whether it is reinforced concrete or concrete bloc
Stèle de la 1ère DFL - Square du Souvenir
20th C
La Croix-Valmer
A stele in honor of the 1st Division Française Libre (DFL) stands in the shade of the cypress and pine trees in the Jardin des Souvenirs. In addition to liberating La Croix-Valmer, this army corps played a major role in the reconquest of the French territory.
Stèle en hommage aux armées libératrices et à la Brigade des Maures
20th C
La Croix-Valmer
While this stele celebrates the liberation of La Croix-Valmer by the Allied armies, it also honors the actions of the Brigade des Maures, underlining the decisive role played by the Resistance's internal forces during the Provence landings.
Monument commémoratif du débarquement
20th C
Sainte-Maxime
In the Nartelle district, a stele has been erected amidst a flowerbed to honor the memory of the 2nd Cuirassiers Regiment. It serves as an everlasting reminder that, on August 15 1944, its tanks were the first to reach Sainte-Maxime.
Town hall
16th C
Gassin
The town hall of Gassin receives the council of the commune since its creation in 1584. It knew successive enlargements and accommodated the common oven and the communal school. It is symbolic of the architecture of the villages of Provence of these periods.
